Primary Years Programme (PYP) Grading System
1. Assessment Approach
The PYP does not use traditional grades (A-F or numerical scores). Instead, it employs a criterion-based assessment approach that evaluates students’ progress against set learning objectives.
2. Reporting Student Progress
Teachers assess students through:
- Formative assessments: Ongoing activities such as projects, reflections, presentations, and teacher observations.
- Summative assessments: End-of-unit tasks that evaluate students’ overall understanding.
3. Assessment Criteria in PYP
Instead of grades, PYP students are assessed using descriptive feedback based on the following:
- Emerging: Student is beginning to understand the concept.
- Developing: Student demonstrates partial understanding and requires some support.
- Demonstrating: Student shows solid understanding and can apply knowledge independently.
- Extending: Student demonstrates advanced understanding and applies knowledge creatively.
4. PYP Exhibition (Final Year Assessment)
- In the final year of PYP, students participate in the PYP Exhibition, a collaborative research project that showcases their learning across multiple subjects.
- This is internally assessed by teachers based on presentation, research skills, critical thinking, and creativity.
📌 Final Reporting:
- Schools provide progress reports based on qualitative descriptions rather than numerical grades.
- Some schools may use rubrics or progress indicators to show student development.
